South East
Visitors to Edinburgh, East Lothian and the Southeast of Scotland quickly realise that they experiencing immersing themselves in the history of golf. It was here on the banks of the Firth of Forth that the game saw its earliest development and some of the greatest events in golfing history have held centre stage only a few miles from the Scottish capital, Edinburgh.
The ancient links of Old Musselburgh is still widely accepted as the oldest golf course in the world and has a fascinating history. Others nearby like Gullane and North Berwick are just as historically important while the mighty links of Muirfield, which has hosted so many exciting Open Championships, is home to the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers, the oldest golf club in existence.
The stretch of wonderful links golf courses to the east of Edinburgh is a magnet for lovers of seaside golf and the game’s historic past, but in the city itself there is a wealth of magnificent golf courses waiting to be explored. Not least among it is the collection of fine municipal courses like Braid Hills and Silverknowes with its fairways rolling down to the Firth of Forth.
To the south the Borders area is fast emerging as a golfers paradise with The Roxburghe course near Kelso already enjoying an international reputation while others like Peebles and West Linton offer magnificent holiday golf in the finest setting.
A new course at Cardrona just outside Peebles is the latest addition to the splendid choice of courses in the Southeast.
