The site of the present course at Dunbar is said to have been chosen by Oliver Cromwell for the camp to rest his troops before the Battle of Dunbar in 1650. There is a long history of golf on the links around this historic old town just around the headland beyond North Berwick on the coastal route to Berwick-on-Tweed. There is a record of a local minister being censured for playing 'gouff' in 1640 and a quarter of a century before that of two men finding themselves in hot water for playing 'at ye nyneholis' on the Sabbath. The course occupies a thin strip of links land beside the sea and alongside an exposed and rocky beach. The quality of the challenge is reflected in the number and of important Scottish Championships that have been played over it including the Scottish Amateur and Professional Championships.
