The 18 hole golf course at Newton Stewart is set in mature
parkland, close to the town, but on the edge of the Galloway Forest
Park, with spectacular views towards lofty Cairnsmore and across
Wigtown Bay. The challenge provided is sufficient for the Club to
host county Championships from time to time, but is still enjoyable
for visitors of all standards who are warmly welcomed on the course
and in the clubhouse. The lay-out opens with a pair of par fours
around 350 yards long with 'out of bounds' on the right, so
accuracy rather than length from the tee is required to score well.
A short climb to the 3rd tee brings you to the first of five par
threes, which are a special feature of the course. This one is
called 'Houlit's Nest' and the others, 'Doocot, Gushet, Soup Plate
and Punchbowl', each provide their own particular demands. Around
the turn, the 8th, 9th and 10th are set around a picturesque
lochan, whose adjacent burn comes into play. Find mature trees and
patches of whins are more than just a scenic backdrop and may
easily feature strongly on the closing holes. Holes 12 to 16 each
have their own particularly fearsome spots, before the final holes
remind you that it really is a pleasant place after all: provided
you keep out of the playing field next door! Which is not included
in the boundaries of the course. Afterwards you can enjoy some
excellent catering in the fully licensed clubhouse. If you love
golf - you'll love it here!
