The Strathtyrum Course, under the ownership and guidance of
the St Andrews Links Trust, opened for play in 1993 along with the
newly developed and smaller Balgove Course. At the time it became
the first new 18 layout to come into play at St Andrews for 80
years and took its name from the adjacent Strathtyrum Estate form
which the land was purchased. A Donald Steel design, it requires
skill and patience, just like any other good links golf course. It
lies primarily on an east to west axis with the result that the
prevailing westerly winds can play havoc when judging
distance.
