Archie Simpson laid out the first course at Murcar in 1909 in spectacular links land in the north east of Scotland north of Aberdeen. Master architect James Braid is known to have made alterations to the original layout in the early 1930s and recently Graeme J Webster's Team Niblick Limited have carried out alterations and improvements sympathetic to what Simpson and Braid had set out to achieve. Murcar is a heritage of classic links golf which television commentator Peter Alliss once famously described as a course "not entirely suitable for beginners". But the fact is that anyone who plays this magnificent links cannot fail to be impressed by and take wonderful enjoyment from it. Murcar Links hosted the inaugural Scottish Challenge European Challenge Tour event in the summer of 2006, shortly after its refurbished Clubhouse and practice area were opened.
