The 2014 Ryder Cup

Gleneagles PGA Centenary

In 2014, Scotland will host what is now one of the world’s biggest sporting tournaments and the biggest event on the global golf calendar, The 2014 Ryder Cup, at Gleneagles. The event will put Scotland’s golfing credentials on the world stage as all eyes turn to the famous PGA Centenary Course for the 40th Ryder Cup matches.

The countdown has well and truly started for the match between the Continent of Europe and the United States, to be held Ryder Cup Logoover the PGA Centenary Course at the fabulous Gleneagles Hotel resort in six years time.

This will be the first time in more than 40 years that the prestigious tournament has been played on Scottish soil. When the Ryder Cup was played at Muirfield in 1973, crowds were no bigger than for any other tournament played in Scotland. The 2014 Ryder Cup is expected to attract in excess of 40,000 spectators daily.

Scotland has played host to the event before, an American side containing the likes of Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Lee Trevino beating Great Britain & Ireland, who were captained by Bernard Hunt in the match, 19-13 at Muirfield back in 1973.

Today the Ryder Cup is regarded as the third biggest event on the sporting calendar, behind only the football World Cup and the Olympics.

That, of course, means the eyes of the golfing world will be focusing on Gleneagles in 2014 and bosses at the five-star resort in the heart of beautiful Perthshire are determined to provide a top-quality venue.

While Jack Nicklaus designed the PGA Centenary Course – it was originally known as the Monarch’s – David McLay Kidd, a local man and one of the top young course designers around these days, has been making thoughtful changes to the layout in recent years. More changes are in the pipeline, including alterations to the current 18th hole.
