Ryder Cup 2014 - did you know?
The first informal competition between
British and American teams was held on The King's course at The
Gleneagles Hotel in 1921. A strong British team that included James
Braid won the competition and started a golfing rivalry which has
lasted nearly a century and is now known as the Ryder Cup
Matches.
Ryder Cup 2010 captain, Colin Montgomerie, is one
of Scotland’s most prolific professional golfers and has
made eight consecutive Ryder Cup appearances. Sam Torrance has
done Scotland proud at the Ryder Cup Matches by captaining the
winning team in 2002 at The Belfry, a course where he previously
made the winning putt at the Ryder Cup in 1985.
In 2014, Scotland will host the biggest event on
the global golf calendar for the first time in more than 40 years
when the 2014 Ryder Cup comes to Gleneagles. The
event will put Scotland’s golfing credentials on the world stage as
all eyes turn to the famous PGA Centenary Course for the 40th Ryder
Cup Matches.
This will be the first time Scotland has hosted
the event in its capacity as the third largest sporting event in
the world.
The 2014 Ryder Cup is expected to attract in
excess of 40,000 spectators daily.
