Family Golf

Long gone are the days when golf was an elitist sport played, traditionally, by middle class businessmen. Nowadays, it is enjoyed by people of all ages, making it a truly ‘family sport’.

Family golfOrganisations have been doing their bit to encourage interaction at all levels in golf and the results of their combined efforts have paid considerable dividends in recent years. Consequently, more and more families have started to take up the sport together. Indeed, how many other sports allow fathers, mothers, sons and daughters to play together?

In the last 20 years or so, more and more clubs in Scotland are concentrating on trying to encourage the growth of their various sections - mainly, their female and junior divisions - and the knock-on effect of this has been an up-turn in the number of families taking up the sport together. Scottish golf clubs are becoming increasingly well-renowned for being warm, welcoming and, crucially, child-friendly places.

Child-friendly courses

Many have even taken great steps to try and encourage parents and their children to take up the game together with the construction of fantastic new par-3 courses which allow parents to hone their short-game skills as the children get their first proper taste of what a real golf course is like.

Par-3 courses, such as the ones at North Berwick, Turnberry and Gleneagles, are becoming more common at top golf venues all across the country.

Of course, it’s not just golf clubs encourage the development of family golfing. Driving ranges are also helping to encourage parents and their children to take up the game.

Driving ranges these days are far more than just bay after bay of people hitting golf balls into vast open spaces. Modern ones have a complete array of facilities, including par-3 courses, practice putting greens and practice bunkers, all of which have helped create a situation where it’s not uncommon to see parents and their children practising alongside each other.

Some driving ranges even have their own cafes and restaurants where families can sit down and enjoy a meal together after a fun day’s golfing.

Golf Passes are particularly popular with families, providing great value for money. Visit our Special Offers section to find out more.
