Top 5 Scottish golf course designers
Whilst great golfers come and go, great
golf courses transcend generations - and Scottish golf
professionals have proven a dab-hand at turning any stretch of
unused land into a golf course of exquisite quality. Interestingly
some of the world’s finest layouts were designed by Scots - here
are five greats past and present.
James Braid
Braid won five Claret Jugs and was runner-up in a
further three Opens in a 10-year period from 1901. After retiring
from playing the game professionally, he took to designing courses
and his craftsmanship was responsible for some of the finest
courses in Scotland today.
Old Tom Morris
The ‘Grand Old Man of Golf’ produced famous
tracts such as Cruden Bay, Leven Links, Machrihanish, Blairgowrie
and Muirfield.
Willie Park Junior
Responsible for over 100 of the world’s finest
golfing layouts today. The Musselburgh man’s career in golf course
design took him from Western Europe to North America, although some
of his finest works are right here in Scotland and include
Carnoustie and Burntisland.
Sam Torrance
The 2002 Ryder Cup-winning captain has already
co-produced the marvellous Torrance Course at the St Andrews Bay
Resort.
Colin Montgomerie
Has designed many top courses around the world
with his first in Scotland, the Rowallan Castle golf development
just outside Glasgow.
