Cavens, built by Sir Richard Oswald in 1752, remained in the Oswald family until as recently as the 1960s. Sir Richard was a wealthy Tobacco Baron whose 'Cavens Estates' stretched all over Dumfriesshire and into Ayrshire.

Oswald had several connections with America and was a personal friend of Benjamin Franklin. The Oswald's were also known by Robert Burns who, so moved by the death of Mrs Oswald, wrote and 'Ode sacred to the memory of Mrs. Oswald'.

Cavens, now the home of Angus and Jane Fordyce, is a comfortable Country House Hotel offering tranquility and relaxation in unspoilt South West Scotland. The hotel restaurant also comes highly recommended, and is accredited with 3 Medallions by VisitScotland and 1 Rosette by the AA.
