Sea Breezes and Classic Coastal Links
In the hinterland of his home town of Elie in the East Neuk of Fife James Braid has left to the world of golf some of his finest creations. Classic links exposed to the vagaries of wind and tide; golf robust and challenging and yet almost spiritual in the beauty of its surroundings
James Braid's ability to make the most of classic linksland is well reflected at Panmure where there are a several blind shots as a legacy of his work there in the 1920s. Records remain sketchy on the extent or date of his redesign work at Arbroath but there is no debate about the splendour of his achievements at Carnoustie. Widely regarded as one of the toughest tests of championship golf in the world the Angus course was redesigned by James Braid from a layout in which several famous names, including Old Tom Morris and Allan Roberston, had previously had a hand. Lundin is a delightful links on the north shore of the Firth of Forth only four miles from Braid's birthplace at Elie, while Scotscraig is an unusual and exciting mix of links and heathland golf.
