Inverness is an ideal base to play wonderful golf and to savour the delights of Highland hospitality.
Day 1
A short journey north will take you over the Moray Firth on to the Black Isle. A few miles along the A832 that brings you to the delightful course at Fortrose and Rosemarkie. This is a classic old links and you'll find a great feeling of peace and tranquillity here on the northern shore of the Firth.
Day 2
Visit one of the truly great links golf courses in world golf. Beautiful, fast greens and keen turf are the hallmarks of the Nairn Golf Club, which owes its design first to Old Tom Morris and later to James Braid. Wonderful views across the Firth to the Black Isle, great stands of gorse and thick rough make for memorable golf.
Day 3
Play at Inverness Golf Course situated on a rolling plateau overlooking the Beauly Firth, this par 69, SSS 70 parkland course has a number of features. The tree-lined course with the Millburn running through demands accurate hitting to stay out of trouble. The highlight of the course has to be the dog-leg 14th hole, which at 475 yards, not only demands length and accuracy off the tee, but an extremely narrow entrance into a small green requires the steeliest of nerves with a long iron or wood. At 461 yards, the 18th is one of the best finishing holes in the north.
Day 4
Head north to the famous Links of Royal Dornoch, but do not hurry it for the scenery en route is spectacular and you will want time to relish the prospect of another of the world's great links courses.
Day 5
While this far north it would be folly indeed not to tarry just a little longer before the return to Inverness for it is such wonderful countryside. Find a local bed and breakfast - there are many excellent ones in the area - and have a day at Golspie only a few miles further up the A9. Here you will find one of the most charming of all holiday golf courses; an unusual mixture of woodland, parkland and links all in the one layout. There are six holes of each and Golspie is a perfect follow up to the rigorous challenge of the great links of Dornoch.
Day 6
Now it is time to move south from Inverness to the glories of Boat of Garten in the shadow of the Cairngorms. It's hard to concentrate on golf here in the heart of the Scottish Highlands. The sheer majesty and rugged beauty of the place add a rare dimension to the golf, which you will find, is a bigger test of accuracy than of length.
